Ca’Marcanda was purchased by Angelo Gaja in 1996. The name "Ca'Marcanda" is derived from the Piedmontese dialect and means "house of endless negotiations” due what was apparently a lengthy period of meetings to finalise the purchase from the previous owners. The site was uncultivated when the Gaja’s purchased the site, formerly used for cattle breeding and fruit orchards and was the only site in this much sorted after area that had yet to be propagated with vines on these clayey-calcareous soils at the foot of the Metalliferous Hills. The Ca’Marcanda estate is planted with over 120 hectares split between the original plantings in 1996 in Bolgheri (69 hectares) and a further 48 hectares in neighbouring Bibbona. The label itself represents the road named ‘Bolgheri Boulevard’, a road lined by 2500 cypresses. The white triangles represent the sky and the road with the coloured parts are the famous trees themselves
